Palace sees no legal hurdle in extending voters' registration for Eleksyon 2022

Malacañang said Tuesday there is no reason for President Rodrigo Duterte to reject bills seeking the extension of the voter registration period for Eleksyon 2022.

Presidential spokesperson Harry Roque made the response in light of both the House of Representatives and the Senate

passing bills providing for a month-long extension of voter registration.

“Wala pa po ang papel sa Malacañang. Pero walang nakikitang hadlang, unless sa pag-aaral ng legal department ng OES [Office of the Executive Secretary] ay may legal objection (The bills have yet to reach the Palace, but we don’t see any impediment, unless the OES legal team has an objection'),” Roque said during the Palace briefing.

“Pero sa tingin ko naman, walang legal objection (But in my opinion, there is no legal objection),” Roque added.

The voters’ registration for Eleksyon 2022 is supposed to end on September 30.

The Commission on Elections (Comelec), however, already said Tuesday that it is likely to extend the voters’ registration amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

Many Filipinos expressed frustration at having to line up for days to ensure they will be included in the daily cutoff for the voter registration at offices of the Comelec and other sites, with the September 30 deadline nearing. —KG, GMA News
