240 more PNP personnel contract COVID-19, bringing total cases to 39,707

The Philippine National Police (PNP) has recorded a total of 39,707 COVID-19 cases with 240 new infections among its personnel as of Wednesday.

In an update, the PNP said at least 37,460 have already recovered from the disease while 2,130 are still active cases.

The death toll due to COVID-19 among the police organization remained at 117.

On Tuesday, the PNP said the latest fatality was a police commissioned officer assigned in the Mimaropa Region who died of medical complications due to COVID-19.

The 45-year-old cop was listed as a confirmed case on September 22. He was admitted at a hospital with an initial diagnosis of “COVID-19 probable severe, hypertension stage II, and metabolic encephalopathy.”

According to the PNP, his cause of death was acute respiratory failure due to pneumonia and pulmonary embolism.

The cop received his first dose of COVID-19 vaccine on July 27.

PNP chief Police General Guillermo Eleazar extended his condolences to the family and colleagues of the deceased police officer.

The Philippines’ tally of COVID-19 infections rose to 2,522,965 on Tuesday with 13,846 new infections.

The new cases brought the country’s active tally to 132,139.

The Department of Health also announced that total recoveries climbed to 2,353,140, while the death toll climbed to 37,686. —Joviland Rita/KG, GMA News
