Comelec cancels multiple COCs filed by Ilocos Norte aspirant

The Commission on Elections (Comelec) has cancelled the multiple certificates of candidacy filed by a political aspirant from Ilocos Norte for Eleksyon 2022, poll spokesperson James Jimenez disclosed Wednesday.

“The Law Department cancelled the COCs of Arlene Josephine Butay (Independent) who filed COCs for Vice President and Senator,” Jimenez said.

“Under the law and COMELEC regulations, a candidate who files a COC for two or more positions shall not be eligible for any of them,” he added.

On the last day of the filing period last week, Arlene Josephine "Joy Butay" Mintalon filed one COC for vice president and another one for senator.

In a speech following the filing, Mintalon said she has also filed her COC for vice governor in her province of Ilocos Norte.

“Bakit ako tumakbo sa tatlong posisyon pa? Because masyado nang personal ang mga patama ng mga nangangandidato at nasa gobyerno being legislative or whatever,” she said.

(Why did I file for three positions? Because the candidates are getting personal already. They may be part of the government, in the legislative or whatever.)

Mintalon said there is a “need for a true legislator.”

If elected, she said she will push for pensions for the poor and senior citizens, lasting peace and fair democracy, among others.
