A suspected member of the New People's Army was killed while two female minors were rescued in separate encounters between the military and communist rebels in Negros Oriental Friday last week.

According to the Philippine Army's 3rd Infantry Division on Wednesday, 21-year-old Rickim Remasog, an alleged member of the Communist Party of the Philippines-NPA’s Leonardo Panaligan Command in central Negros was killed in a clash at Sitio Maluy-a at Barangay Sandayao in Guihulngan City.

Meanwhile, government troops rescued the two minors during a separate encounter in the city on August 14.

The firefight took place near Sitio Tabago, also at Barangay Sandayao. The troops involved were from the 62nd Infantry Battalion.

Moreover, troops also arrested one Rennel Remasog, 20, and an unidentified communist rebel during the series of clashes.

Seized after the clashes were one caliber .30 M1 Carbine rifle, a shotgun, two caliber .45 pistols, live ammunition, and some subversive documents, the military said.

Major General Eric Vinoya, commander of the Army's 3rd Infantry Division, said the incident was a result of the shared concept of security among the local government unit, the residents and the government forces.

“This incident is a result of the cooperation and collaboration among the people, the LGUs and the security sector," Vinoya said.

"The people are already fed-up by the threats posed by the CPP-NPA who continuously terrorize their communities with intimidation, extortion, and murder; hence, they denounce these terrorists by reporting the location of their lairs.” Vinoya added. -MDM, GMA News
