Palace vows steady help for Bicol, West Visayas flood victims

Malacañang on Sunday assured continuous government assistance for Region V and Region VI families affected by the flooding brought about by the tail-end of a frontal system.

According to presidential spokesperson Harry Roque, P1.58 million-worth of assistance had been provided by the Department of Social Welfare and Development, local government units, and private partners to affected families in the two regions as of January 7.

Meanwhile, a total of nine families in Camarines Sur and 4,207 others in Negros Occidental were transferred to evacuation centers amid the flooding, according to the January 9 monitoring report of the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council.

At the same time, around 1,100 residents in flooded areas in Talisay City and Victoria City in Negros Occidental had been rescued.

At least two individuals from Sorsogon and Camarines Sur have reportedly died due to the massive flooding brought by the tail-end of a frontal system.

In its early morning forecast on Sunday, Pagasa said that cloudy skies with scattered rain showers and thunderstorms could be expected throughout the day over Eastern and Central Visayas.

The expected moderate to heavy rain may cause flash floods or landslides. — DVM, GMA News
