27 quakes, steam-laden plumes observed around Mayon Volcano

At least 27 volcanic earthquakes as well as plumes were observed around Mayon Volcano in Albay, PHIVOLCS said in a bulletin on Saturday.

According the institute, the tremors were recorded during a 24-hour observation period.

Apart from the temblors, PHIVOLCS observed the moderate emission of white steam-laden plumes that crept downslope before drifting to the northeast.

"Overall, the Mayon edifice is still inflated with respect to baseline parameters," PHIVOLCS said.

It said that no magmatic eruption is presently imminent, but an Alert Level 1 remains hoisted in the area, meaning the volcano is at an abnormal condition.

"It is strongly advised that the public refrain from entering the 6-kilometer radius Permanent Danger Zone (PDZ) due to the perennial life-threatening dangers of rockfalls, landslides/avalanches at the middle to upper slope, sudden ash puffs and steam-driven or phreatic eruptions from the summit.

Active stream and river channels and those identified as perennially lahar-prone areas on all sectors of the volcano should also be avoided especially during extreme weather conditions when there is heavy and prolonged rainfall, it added. -MDM, GMA News
