A Filipino multinational supermarket chain designer-turned-film-director in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), once again, received acclamation during the Rameshwaram International Film Festival on August 24.

Francis Luscianne Javier Gacer, 45, has won "Best Director" award for the short film "Apo" (Grandchild), qualifying it for the Golden Shell Film Awards based in India.

He has also been given the same recognition during the Roshani Film Festival for the film "Pamilya Braces

"; the Europe Film Festival for the film "Panahon Ng Ligalig"; and the Nawada International Film Festival for the film "Langay-langayan sa Nanunuyong Palayan".

"I believe that this particular award is not dependent on what we have achieved previously. I was awarded BEST DIRECTOR for the fourth time around simply because of the casts who have portrayed the characters, giving life to the script that I have written," opined Gacer in an interview via email on August 25.

Apo is about how Jepoy, a street dweller, who "walked through the tightrope of life’s challenges with Lola Issing, his grandmother who is ill, as street dwellers." Eventually, the succeeding events have encased the two in a grim situation with the murder of Mocha.

"I am proud to say that they have evolved into well-seasoned artists, able to capture the hearts and emotions of the viewers," he added, referring to each of the cast and crew members who have helped him ensure the quality of the film amidst the COVID-19 pandemic.

"An effective and well-applauded film should be able to enter the back door of the viewer's imagination. People spend time or money to watch a movie because it is perceived as an emotional gate leading a viewer to an experience even beyond reality. It is always about soliciting the emotional favor of those who will watch and embarking them to a realm that they have never been before."

A week ago, KMF’s production of “Panahon Ng Ligalig” was selected for the Singapore World Film Carnival while  the “Langay-langayan Sa Nanunuyong Palayan” was screened in Turkey on August 25.

The latter was also nominated for the “Best Short Film” at the 2nd Fotofilm International Short Film Festival there. —LBG, GMA News
