DOST exploring lagundi as a treatment for COVID-19

The Department of Science and Technology is exploring herbal medicine lagundi as a potential treatment for the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19).

According to Mav Gonzales’ Sunday report on “24 Oras Weekend,” DOST Secretary Fortunato dela Peña said lagundi had anti-viral and anti-inflammatory properties that could possibly help improve the treatment of COVID-19 patients.

He, however, said lagundi would only be tested on mild COVID-19 cases.

Aside from lagundi, the DOST was also exploring other herbal medicines such as virgin coconut oil and tawa-tawa for the treatment of COVID-19.

Dela Peña also clarified that clearance from the Food and Drug Administration was needed before commencing with clinical trials. — Ma. Angelica Garcia/DVM, GMA News
