Solar halo amazes some Southern Tagalog folk

A solar halo appeared before noontime Saturday in Southern Tagalog or Region IV, prompting some people to gaze at the sky, and others to take pictures of the phenomenon.

According to experts at the state-run Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA), a ring or arc of light around the sun or moon is caused by the refraction of light through ice crystals in the atmosphere.

Superstitious people are mixed about what the phenomenon forebodes. To some it warns of a bad thing coming, and to others it is a sign of good luck.
