LRT1, LRT2 to offer free rides during certain hours on Independence Day

Commuters will get to board the Light Rail Transit Lines 1 and 2 for free during certain hours on June 12 in celebration of the country’s 124th Independence Day.

In a statement, LRT1 private operator Light Rail Manila Corp. (LRMC) said passengers of the railway line would enjoy free rides on June 12 from 7 a.m. to 9 a.m. and from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.

LRMC said beep card holders shall pass through the usual Automated Fare Collection System (AFCS) gates and tap their cards to avail of the free ride without charge, while passengers without beep cards may get single journey tickets for free from the LRT1 teller booths.

The company added that LRT1 would follow normal operating hours on Independence Day, with the first trips leaving both Baclaran and Balintawak stations at 4:30 a.m. and the last trips at 9:15 p.m. at Baclaran Station and 9:30 p.m. at Balintawak Station.

On the other hand, the Light Rail Transit Authority (LRTA) announced that free rides would be implemented at the LRT2 from 7 a.m. to 9 a.m. and from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.

to ease the financial burden of commuters amid the spike in petroleum prices.

Beep card promo

Apart from free rides, the LRMC also announced it reduced the cost of a new beep card with load to P50 from P100.

The company said the cost of the beep card remains at P30, but the minimum load required for new card purchases was reduced to P20 from the previous P70.

Passengers may avail of the offer until September 30, 2022 at LRT1 teller booths only.

Beep cards have a validity of four years, which is subject to extension upon request at LRT1 stations. — DVM, GMA News
