Britney Spears says she 'pretended to be OK' the past 2 years because she was 'embarrassed'

Britney Spears is shattering any illusion that her life is a fairy tale.

In an Instagram post, the legendary singer said that based on what she has been posting online, her life "seems to look and be pretty amazing."

However, she said that it's "definitely not at all."

"I don’t want people to think my life is perfect," she wrote. "And if you have read anything about me in the news this week… you obviously really know now it’s not!"

Britney has been embroiled in a battle to end a controversial guardianship that has given her father control of her affairs since 2008.

The 39-year-old star's finances and personal life have been largely managed by Jamie Spears since her highly public breakdown more than a decade ago, leading some adoring fans to launch a "FreeBritney" online campaign in recent years.

"I apologize for pretending like I’ve been OK the past two years," Britney said. "I did it because of my pride and I was embarrassed to share what happened to me… but honestly who doesn’t want to capture [their] Instagram in a fun light."

However, she said that pretending she was okay "actually helped."

"I feel like Instagram has helped me have a cool outlet to share my presence… existence… and to simply feel like I matter despite what I was going through and hey it worked," she said. "So I’ve decided to start reading more fairy tales."

On Wednesday, Britney took to the courtroom to deliver an impassioned speech about how the legal arrangement has left her "traumatized" and "depressed."

Last year, she filed to remove her father from the conservatorship and give sole power over her estate to a financial institution. Her court-appointed lawyer said she was "afraid" of her father. —JCB, GMA News
