Trainer guarantees no ring rust for Jerwin Ancajas’ return

Jerwin Ancajas’ trainer and manager Joven Jimenez guarantees that his fighter will be in tip-top shape for his ninth title defense against Mexico’s Jonathan Rodriguez.

The reigning IBF world super flyweight world champion from Panabo City last saw action in December 2019 against Miguel Gonzalez where he won by way of sixth-round technical knockout.

Ancajas has been training all year but it has also been his longest layoff yet since he turned pro in 2009. Knowing that his prizefighter could end up burned out leading to his next fight, Jimenez made sure to moderate their training until Ancajas' next trip inside the ring becomes official.

“I don’t think there will be (ring rust) because we see that he is in good condition during his training and sparring, and his eagerness is there,” noted Jimenez.

“What we do is we watch over his conditioning and not let him reach his peak since we don’t have a fight date yet.”

MP Promotions president Sean Gibbons, who is a key figure in making Ancajas’ next fight, echoed Jimenez’s statement saying that Ancajas takes good care of himself between bouts.

“Even when Jerwin is not fighting every day is a lifestyle. He lives it, he trains like he’s fighting. I preach the fighters it’s year-round. Jerwin every day of his life is boxing. The guy is working every single day,” Gibbons stressed.

Team Ancajas is set to fly to the US on Wednesday to meet with their handlers and finalize his next match on a yet to be determined date in Las Vegas. – JM Siasat/RC, GMA News
