World-rated fighters got injured sparring Eumir Marcial at Wild Card, Jerwin Ancajas reveals

By JM SIASAT

World-rated fighters and even contenders at the famed Wild Card Gym in California got injured for sparring Olympic gold medal hopeful Eumir Marcial, said reigning IBF world super flyweight world champion Jerwin Ancajas.

Ancajas and Marcial spent months training alongside each other in the United States earlier this year as the latter prepared for his pro debut and honed his skills under the tutelage of Hall of Fame trainer Freddie Roach.

While the world champion from Panabo City refused to drop names nor publicly release the videos of the sparring sessions, he vowed that he is a witness of how things can get heated when Marcial steps into the ring.

"He really gives his sparring partners a beating to the point that they avoid him. Sometimes when they call Wild Card to look for sparring partners nobody is available anymore," Ancajas told GMA News Online in Filipino.

"There was a fighter scheduled to compete in a championship that was injured after he sparred Eumir. He ended up losing his fight. Eumir does not want to partner play, he wants to beat you even in sparring. That is his mindset," he added.

Marcial, 25, recently fought in the Asian Elite Championships where he suffered a 5-0 blowout against Saidjamshid Jafarov of Uzbekistan to settle for a bronze medal.

He is heading to the Tokyo Olympics after booking his slot in the qualifiers last year along with Irish Magno. Fellow Pinoy boxers Nesthy Petecio and Carlo Paalam later punched their own tickets for the Summer Games this year.
