Carlo Paalam enters Olympic boxing QFs with win over Algerian foe

Carlo Paalam advanced to the quarterfinals after defeating Mohamed Flissi of Algeria via unanimous decision in the Round of 16 of the men's flyweight division of the boxing event of Tokyo Olympics Saturday at the Kokugikan Arena.

The Filipino boxer faced off against a tough opponent in Flissi, who is representing his country in the Olympics for a third time.

But Paalam scored a 30-27 from all five judges to keep his Olympic stint moving forward.

In the Round of 32, the young pugilist scored a split decision win over defeated Irish national Brendan Irvine.

Later today, another Filipino boxer in Nesthy Petecio will try to vie for a finals seat when she locks horns with Irma Testa of Italy in the semifinals round.
