EJ Obiena clarifies reports on Paris 2024 plans: 'I still know I can win'

EJ Obiena took to social media to clarify reports saying he was 'unsure' of competing in the 2024 Paris Olympics.

"I should not have entertained questions about 2024 so soon after the final. I learned a lesson," Obiena said in his post on Wednesday. "It was just reported that I am 'unsure' or 'not keen' on competing at the 2024 Paris Olympics."

"My comments were taken out of context and have created an uncertainty and distraction to our country’s amazing Olympic performance," Obiena said.

"I did not come to Tokyo 2020 Olympics to experience the Olympics. I did not come to just 'Make the final'. I came to win a medal for my country. This goal was not achieved.," the pole vaulter said.

"I hold myself to high standards. I am thus, understandably upset, disappointed, and reflecting so I can learn and improve myself."

Obiena said at the moment, he is still 'digesting what happened yesterday' and taking all the lessons he learned from the pole vault finals so he can come back better.

"The facts of the matter are simple: I still love the sport of pole vaulting. I still love representing my great country. I still love competing. I still know I can win."

Obiena missed the podium after failing to clear the 5.80-meter mark.

His pole vault performance in the Olympics finished in a dramatic fashion as he raised to officials his concerns about some concerns with the movement of the bar. Despite this, many praised Obiena for standing up for what he believes is right.
