Angel Canino shines in debut as La Salle outlasts UST; Tina Salak steers FEU past UP as new Lady Tams coach

De La Salle University outlasted University of Santo Tomas in a five-set thriller, 25-20, 16-25, 25-8, 15-25, 16-14, on Sunday to open their campaign in UAAP Season 85 on Sunday at the Mall of Asia Arena.

Angel Canino had a rousing debut for the Lady Spikers with 18 points, while Jolina dela Cruz and Leila Cruz made 14 and 12 points each.

Eya Laure tallied 19 points for the Tigresses, while Milena Alessandrini added 10 in the UST loss.

Earlier, Tina Salak also made her debut as head coach of Far Eastern University and steered the Lady Tamaraws past University of the Philippines, 25-16, 23-25, 25-17, 26-24.

Jovelyn Fernandez had 18 points for the Morayta-based squad which snapped an 11-game losing skid dating back to Season 84.

On the men's side, FEU swept UP, 25-22, 25-23, 25-15, while UST defeated La Salle, 25-22, 23-25, 25-22, 25-19.

UAAP volleyball action will return on Wednesday with all women's teams playing at the Mall of Asia Arena. The men's games, meanwhile, will be played at Philsports Arena.
