Maynilad to impose water service interruption in 5 cities to repair damaged pipeline

Some customers of Maynilad will experience water service interruption starting Friday because a damaged pipe has to be repaired, according to a report of Isa Avendano-Umali of Super Radyo dzBB on "Saksi."

The affected areas include some barangays in Manila, Makati, Paranaque, Las Piñas and Pasay.

A third-party contractor for a drainage project accidentally hit a water pipe along Pureza Street corner Abad Santos in Sta. Mesa, Manila causing a massive leak in the area.

The contractor has been working on a drainage project at the site since Monday.

Maynilad is currently conducting an assessment and repair of the damaged pipeline.

According to Maynilad, the water at the site should first be drained to expose the damaged pipeline.

Maynilad corporate communications head Jennifer Rufo said the water at the site should be removed and in order to do so some pipelines have to be closed.

"In some portions po, 18 hours po 'yung interruption, pero in some areas, as long as 36 hours," she added, referring to the duration of the water service interruption the company will implement from July 15 to 16.

Below is the announcement of Maynilad and the areas that will be affected.

In an advisory sent Friday night, Maynilad said "the damage done was on a 150-mm valve and pipe assembly that is across the path of the drainage line being laid" by the third-party contractor.

"The damaged assembly is near Maynilad’s 500mm-diameter pipeline; hence, the strong flow of water from the leak," it added.

"Maynilad workers have already removed the damaged assembly and plugged the leak on the 500mm-diameter pipeline. The next step in the process is to install a new valve on a different point along the 500mm-diameter pipeline," it said.

"This new valve will enable Maynilad to localize any service interruptions that may occur if further damage is made on the said pipeline, which is right beside the drainage line being laid" by the third party-contractor, the company added.

Repair work is currently on schedule, Maynilad said on Friday.

Maynilad will deploy mobile water tankers that will provide potable water to the affected areas.

The water utilities company also warned the public that once water service is restored, customers may notice some discoloration.

The customers may allow the water to flow until this clears or use this to flush toilets or water plants to avoid wastage. BAP/KG, GMA News
