Some Manila residents disregard mask, distancing requirements; Mayor Isko warns violators

Several Manila residents were seen on Thursday ignoring social distancing measures and the proper wearing of face masks in public places as a precaution against COVID-19.

When asked why they weren’t wearing masks, some said they were just texting, or had just finished smoking a cigarette, or had to answer the call of nature.

Minors could also be seen out in public places even though IATF protocols say they are not allowed to leave their homes.

Manila Mayor Isko Moreno warned that those caught violating the Manila city ordinance mandating the wearing of masks in public places will be held liable.

“Pinahuhuli ko pati chairman kapag nagpabaya,” Moreno told GMA News.

He added that on Wednesday he instructed Manila Police District chief Rolando Miranda and all precinct commanders “to implement existing laws.”

Moreno also warned parents whose children are caught loitering outside their homes.

“We will make irresponsible parents held liable through regular justice system,” he said.

The World Health Organization advises the wearing of masks and maintaining at least one meter's distance from other people when possible to stop the spread of the virus. 

The Philippines currently has 61,266 confirmed COVID-19 cases, including 21,440 recoveries and 1,643 deaths. — BM, GMA News
