Miriam’s PRP to support Sara Duterte for president in Eleksyon 2022

The People’s Reform Party (PRP), founded by the late Senator Miriam Defensor-Santiago, will support Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte if she runs for president in the coming 2022 elections.

PRP president Narciso “Jun” Santiago Jr., husband of late senator, made the announcement in a statement on Wednesday and after several political parties such as the National Unity Party and Lakas-CMD expressed similar support to Mayor Sara.

“The PRP will give its full support to Mayor Sara if she decides to run for president in the 2022 elections,” Mr. Santiago said.

“As party President, I want to state that we in the PRP believe that Mayor Sara Duterte can continue the advocacies and principles of former Senator Miriam Santiago. We are are hoping that Mayor Sara will heed the strong clamor from the people for her to run for the highest post in the land,” he pointed out.

Mr. Santiago said PRP and Mayor Sara’s local political party Hugpong ng Pagbabago (HNP) already forged an alliance in December 2018 for the 2019 polls, and such alliance can happen again in the 2022 elections.

“This alliance may be renewed. PRP and HNP share many things in common; both parties focus on reform, discipline, leadership and fighting corruption in government,” he added.

Mayor Sara has been leading pre-election polls but has yet to decide in pursuing a 2022 presidential bid.

In the 2019 polls, nine of the 12 winners in the Senate race were backed by the HNP. The only 2019 Senate race winners who did not have HNP backing were reelectionists Senators Grace Poe, Nancy Binay and Lito Lapid. — Llanesca T. Panti/RSJ, GMA News
