The Philippine National Police has arrested a total of 64 people who violated the gun ban in connection with this year's election period.

Based on the latest data as of Thursday, the PNP arrested 24 new violators — all civilians.

The police confiscated eight firearms, 43 ammunition, six deadly weapons, and two other items in 2,584 checkpoints across the country.

According to the PNP, the new violators were from Quezon City, Antipolo, Pasay, Pasig, Dasmariñas, Tarlac, Saranggani, Masbate, Lipa, Cebu, Olongapo, Negros Occidental, Bulacan, Zamboanga, and Abra.

The Commission on Election has issued Resolution No. 10728 that prohibits the bearing, carrying, or transporting of firearms or deadly weapons outside residence and in all public places from January 9 to June 8.

Only law enforcers are exempted from the gun ban as long as they obtain authorization from the Comelec and wear agency-prescribed uniform while performing official duty during the election period.

The PNP earlier appealed to the public to follow the resolution of the Comelec on guns and deadly weapons for the election period.

Violators may face imprisonment of not less than one year but not more than six years and shall not be subject to probation, according to the PNP.

The guilty party may also face disqualification to hold public office, deprivation of the right of suffrage and cancellation or perpetual disqualification to secure gun license, it added. — RSJ, GMA News
