Robredo camp: Comelec should immediately investigate 'Smartmatic breach'

By LLANESCA T. PANTI,GMA News

The Commission on Elections should immediately investigate the alleged breach in the operations of automated elections system provider Smartmatic, the camp of presidential candidate Vice President Leni Robredo has said.

Robredo's spokesman lawyer Ibarra Gutierrez issued the statement in response to Senator Imee Marcos' disclosure a security breach occurred within the operations of Smartmatic.

It was alleged that data regarding Smartmatic, including personal information, ledgers, photos of their office, contact persons in the Comelec, might have been accessed by a group.

"Comelec should take immediate action to fully investigate and take the appropriate action," Gutierrez said.

"Regardless of the candidate we support, we can all agree on the importance of honest, peaceful, and credible elections," he added.

Gutierrez said such claims should be made with prudence.

"We should be responsible in making any claim regarding supposed breaches" Gutierrez said.

Comelec Commissioner George Garcia said the poll body would wait for the report from the National Bureau of Investigation as regards the alleged infringement.

Imee is the sister of former Senator and presidential candidate Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos, Jr.

Imee and Bongbong are children of the late dictator Ferdinand Marcos who was ousted from office via a bloodless People Power Revolt in February 1986.
