Sara Duterte thanks placeholder for VP post as she leads in race

By GMA News

Thanking her staff and supporters for a victory in the offing in the vice presidential race, Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte did not forget about the person who first filed a certificate of candidacy (COC) for Lakas-CMD as the party awaits her final decision.

“Nagpapasalamat ako kay ma’am Faye at kay sir Lyle for taking on the challenge of being candidate first for Lakas-CMD,” she said in a "24 Oras" report by Ian Cruz.

Duterte was referring to Lyle Fernando Uy who in November 2021 filed a COC

for vice president.  Another Lakas-CMD member, Anna Capella Velasco also filed a COC for president.

The move meant that Duterte, who at that time had quit her local party Hugpong ng Pagbabago and joined Lakas-CMD,  may choose to substitute either if she runs for a national post.

Duterte at first filed a COC to run for a fresh term as Davao mayor, but quit the race.  On November 14, 2021, a day before the deadline for the COC filing, she announced she is running for vice president and substituted Uy.

Facing her campaign team on Tuesday night, as she led in the partial, official count of the Commission on Elections, Duterte said she was confident in her staff that she slept soundly as the Filipinos cast their votes on election day.

“Sabi nga nila di ba walang matutulog dahil ang natutulog ay nadadaya. But I was so confident sa inyong lahat...kasi nandyan kayo, hinahanap ako kagabi, tulog na ako,” Duterte said.

“31 million votes ay ginawa ninyong lahat. Ako lang 'yung kandidato. Because of that, collective effort natin lahat at nakita natin na mayroong success ‘yung ating kandidatura and nagpapasalamat ako sa inyo,” she added.—LDF, GMA News
