Comelec suspends COC filing, other activities for BSKE 2022

By RICHA NORIEGA,GMA News

The Commission on Elections (Comelec) on Saturday suspended the filing of certificates of candidacy (COCs) for the December barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan elections (BSKE) following the passage of the law postponing the polls to October 2023.

The filing of COCs was supposed to take place from October 22 to 29.

Other activities and prohibited acts under the calendar of activities for the December 5, 2022 BSKE have also been suspended.

Comelec spokesperson John Rex Laudiangco said the poll body must adjust its calendar of activities, which includes the period for the filing of COCs, the election period, the period of the gun ban and other prohibited acts, the campaign period, and the last day of filing of the Statement of Contribution and Expenditures.

All of these will be set approximately two months before the new date of the BSKE.

Two petitions questioning the constitutionality of Republic Act 11935—the law that moved the BSKE to the last Monday of October 2023—are pending before the Supreme Court (SC).

The SC on Friday heard arguments for or against the petition filed by veteran election lawyer Romulo Macalintal, with the parties required to submit their respective memoranda within 15 days.

“[T]he Comelec must yield and allow the highest court of the land to resolve the issues raised by the respective petitioners,” Laudiangco said. —VBL, GMA News
