Visayas grid on yellow alert on Wednesday, May 20, 2026

The Visayas grid will be on yellow alert from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, May 20, 2026, the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP) said.

The available capacity is 2,691 MW but peak demand is expected at 2,438 MW, NGCP said.

"A yellow alert is issued when the operating margin is insufficient to meet the transmission grid’s contingency requirement," the company added.

Some power plants have been on forced outage, as follows, NGCP said:

  • 11 plants since May 2026;
  • 1 plant since March 2026;
  • 3 plants since 2025;
  • 2 plants since 2024;
  • 2 plants since 2023; and
  • 1 plant since 2021.

Meanwhile, "13 plants are running on derated capacities, for a total of 852.1MW unavailable to the grid," it added.

The company said the unavailability of Visayas' large coal plants TVI 1, TVI 2, and PEDC 3 as well as the high forecasted system demand contributed to the decision to put the Visayas grid on yellow alert.

In an updated advisory, the NGCP said the yellow alert over the Visayas grid is now from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. with available grid capacity of 2,692 MW against a peak demand of 2,503 MW.

The yellow alert extension was due to the “increased forecasted system demand by around 95 MW.” —with Ted Cordero/KG/VBL, GMA News
