DFA eyes new PH passport with enhanced security features in 2028

The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) is planning to issue the Next Generation Philippine passport with enhanced security features in 2028.

During the House budget hearing on Thursday, DFA Assistant Secretary Emil Fernandez said the agency has allotted P2.8 billion in 2027 to issue the new passport.

It will have the following features:

• Redesigned passport booklet
• Additional pages for full 10-year validity
• Enhanced security features
• Latest contactless chip technology

"Indicative launch is 2028 but over the next year, we would need to phase in the requirements needed for the rollout for the next-generation passport," Fernandez said.

The enhance Philippine passport is funded under the agency's Maintenance and Other Operating Expenses (MOOE), which comprises 54% of DFA's budget for 2027.

DFA has proposed P35.173 billion budget for 2027, which would allow the agency to sustain its operations in national security and diplomacy, among others.

As of July 31, 2026, DFA said it issued 1.578 million passports. — BM, GMA News
