'Michael' sets record for biggest global opening weekend for a biopic
“Michael,” the film about the late pop icon Michael Jackson, has set a box office record for the biggest global opening weekend for a biographical movie.
The film debuted at the top spot at the global box office, earning $217 million (approximately P13.18 billion) in its opening weekend.
In the Philippines, it also opened at no. 1 and recorded the second-biggest debut for a biopic in the country, behind “Bohemian Rhapsody.”
Meanwhile, it ranks as the second-largest debut of the year worldwide, following “The Super Mario Galaxy Movie.”
To mark the release of the “Michael,” Universal Pictures Philippines staged a Michael-themed flash mob in front of SM Megamall, featuring dancers from the International Dance League.
The biopic follows the life of Michael, from his early years as the lead singer of the Jackson Five to his rise as a global performer, highlighting his creative ambitions and career as an entertainer. —Hermes Joy Tunac/JCB, GMA News
