UAAP: La Salle completes Season 88 sweep, reclaims women's volleyball crown
The UAAP women’s volleyball trophy is back on Taft Avenue.
After falling short in the finals for the past two years, De La Salle University reclaimed the crown by sweeping National University in Game 2 of the UAAP Season 88 women’s volleyball finals, 25-22, 25-16, 25-16.
In the third set, both teams were tied at 7-all before the Lady Spikers unleashed a 6-0 run to pull away. Chammy Maaya halted La Salle’s momentum as NU scored three consecutive points before Eshana Nunag answered with a point for La Salle.
The Lady Spikers continued to dominate and built a 21-14 lead before Maaya once again stopped La Salle’s run. The Taft-based squad then scored three straight points, with Amie Provido’s ace putting La Salle at match point. Provido committed a service error on the next play, briefly delaying the celebration, before Shevana Laput sealed the victory.
“Sobrang happy ako dito sa championship na ito. Ito talaga ‘yung target namin after nung Season 87, talagang makabalik dito sa Finals,” said La Salle head coach Ramil de Jesus.
“Hindi ko rin ine-expect na masi-sweep namin 16-0. Proud ako sa mga players ko at sa coaching staff.”
Laput, who was named Finals Most Valuable Player, finished with 20 points, eight digs, and six blocks. Angel Canino, meanwhile, contributed 11 points, 10 receptions, and 10 digs.
Vange Alinsug was the lone double-digit scorer for NU with 14 points, while Shaira Jardio tallied 10 digs and nine receptions.
The victory also completed La Salle’s season sweep, as the Lady Spikers won all 16 games from the elimination round through the finals.
The title marks La Salle’s 13th overall UAAP women’s volleyball championship.
