The Maritime Industry Authority (MARINA) is already looking into the fire incident on a vessel in Coron, Palawan that killed five individuals.
MARINA said that an investigation team was already deployed and assured assistance to the 43 survivors.
The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) on Thursday said a shipping company could potentially face liability over the deadly fire that engulfed the MV June Aster passengery ferry off Coron, Palawan on Wednesday night.
The shipping company of the ill-fated ferry that caught fire off Coron, Palawan said Thursday it would provide burial and transportation assistance to the victims of the sea tragedy that has left at least five dead and dozens missing.
"Sasagutin ng company 'yung transportation ng lahat... Sa nasawi, we are going to provide burial assistance as well," said human resources generalist Dindo Macalinao, who spoke on behalf of Atienza Interisland Ferries Inc.
(The company will shoulder the transporation of everyone... we are going to provide burial assistance as well to those who died.)
Macalinao said the company is also extending immediate aid to survivors, including food, clothing, slippers and other basic necessities.
The fire that broke out on a vessel in Coron, Palawan started in its cargo hold based on the initial account of a surviving crew member, according to the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) on Thursday.
Interviewed on GTV’s Balitanghali, PCG spokesperson Commodore Noemie Cayabyab said the crew member of MV June Aster told authorities the fire started out small.
“Based po sa ating initial inquiry kagabi sa isa sa mga survivor na crew ay nagsimula po ito sa cargo hold. Initially isang maliit lang ng apoy and then ilang segundo ay bigla daw po itong lumaki,” she said.
(Based on our initial inquiry last night from one of the surviving crew, it started in the cargo hold. Initially it was just a small fire and then in a few seconds it suddenly grew.)
Authorities are still locating around 87 individuals following the fire that broke out on a passenger vessel bound for Coron, Palawan, the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) said Thursday.
Interviewed on GMA News’ Unang Balita, PCG spokesperson Commodore Noemie Cayabyab said search and rescue operations remain ongoing.
“Currently, we have 42 rescued individuals and five casualties,” she said.
