Death toll from Luis, Maymay, Neneng, Habagat rises to 31

The death toll from the combined effects of Tropical Cyclones Luis, Maymay, and Neneng, as well as the Southwest Monsoon or Habagat has climbed to 31, the Office of Civil Defense (OCD) said Wednesday.

As of 6 a.m., the OCD reported 31 deaths, 19 injuries, and three people still missing due to the weather disturbances.

Benguet recorded the highest number of fatalities at 15, including 10 in Baguio City, two in La Trinidad, and three in Atok, all due to landslides.

Rizal and Batangas each recorded four deaths.

In Rizal, two people died due to a rockslide in Rodriguez, while one each died due to a fallen tree in Antipolo and drowning in Binangonan.

In Batangas, one person each died due to drowning in Batangas City and Mabini, electrocution in Lipa, and a landslide in Santa Teresita.

The other fatalities were recorded in Occidental Mindoro (2), La Union (1), Quezon City (1), Oriental Mindoro (1), Negros Occidental (1), and Caloocan (1).

A total of 2.2 million families or 7.7 million people were affected by the bad weather in Ilocos Region, Cagayan valley, Central Luzon, Bicol, Zamboanga Peninsula, CALABARZON, Cordillera Administrative Region (CAR), Metro Manila, and MIMAROPA.

Of the affected population, 8,446 families or 28,910 individuals were staying in 346 evacuation centers.

Damage to infrastructure was estimated at P5.5 billion and to agriculture at P1.9 billion, according to the OCD.

Around 2,700 houses were also damaged — 2,400 partially and 323 totally.
