Liquor ban in effect in Dasmariñas City ahead of special elections

The Commission on Elections (Comelec) on Friday imposed a liquor ban in Dasmariñas City, a day ahead of its special election to determine the replacement of former Cavite Representative Francisco “Kiko” Barzaga.

According to Comelec, the prohibited acts on the eve of election day, August 28 include: campaigning, selling, furnishing, offering, buying, serving, or intoxicating liquor; and giving or accepting free transportation, food, drinks, and things of value.

The special election will be held on Saturday, August 29 from 5 a.m. to 7 a.m. for senior citizens, persons with disability, and pregnant voters.

Meanwhile, all registered voters of Dasmariñas may vote from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Comelec chairperson George Garcia previously said it is ready to conduct the special election.

The legislative post became vacant after the House of Representatives expelled Barzaga in June for disorderly behavior and conduct unbecoming of a House member, including repeated failure to fulfill his duties as a lawmaker.

House ethics panel chairperson and 4Ps party-list Representative JC Abalos said expulsion was the only appropriate penalty for Barzaga, as he failed to change his ways despite serving two 60-day suspensions without pay. —VAL, GMA News
