Magnitude-5.3 earthquake jolts Sarangani — PHIVOLCS
A magnitude-5.3 earthquake rattled Glan town in Sarangani on Saturday morning, an aftershock of the more powerful June 8 quake that devastated parts of Mindanao.
In an updated bulletin, PHIVOLCS said the latest quake was recorded at 10:05 a.m. Saturday, with its epicenter located 30 kilometers off the coast of Glan.
It had a depth of 17 kilometers and was tectonic in origin.
Damage was expected from this seismic activity. Aftershocks were deemed unlikely.
PHIVOLCS issued a second bulletin clarifying information in its earlier report, which had stated that the quake was recorded at magnitude-5.7 off Balut Island in Sarangani town, Davao Occidental. It also reported different information about its depth, and the reach of its impact.
GMA Regional TV's One Mindanao shared video on Facebook showing the strength of the earthquake in General Santos City, prompting a mother and her son step out of their home and stand in the middle of the road. They were both reported safe in the aftermath.
The development comes just five days after a magnitude-7.8 earthquake struck parts of Mindanao, leaving at least 61 dead, latest figures from the Office of Civil Defense (OCD) showed on Saturday morning.
The number of injured individuals stood at 1,221, while 33 people are still missing.
According to PHIVOLCS, the earthquake today, Saturday, was felt (reported intensities) in the following areas:
- Intensity V — Sarangani town in Davao Occidental; and Glan in Sarangani province
- Intensity IV — Alabel, Kiamba, Maasim, Malapatan, and Malungon in Sarangani province; Polomolok, T'Boli, and Tupi in South Cotabato; and General Santos City
- Intensity III — Maitum in Sarangani; Koronadal City, Surallah, and Tampakan in South Cotabato; and Lebak in SULTAN KUDARAT
- Intensity II — Matanao in Davao del Sur; Davao City; Banga, Lake Sebu, and Santo Niño in South Cotabato; Kalamansig in Sultan Kudarat
- Intensity I — Tantangan in South Cotabato; Bagumbayan, Esperanza, and Tacurong City in Sultan Kudarat
As for instrumental intensities, or those recorded with scientific devices, the following information was logged:
- Intensity V — General Santos City
- Intensity IV — Santa Maria in Davao Occidental; Kiamba, Maasim, Malapatan, and Malungonin in Sarangani province; T'Boli, and Tupi in South Cotabato
- Intensity III — Digos City in Davao del Sur; Koronadal City and Surallah in South Cotabato
- Intensity II — Magsaysay in Davao del Sur; Kidapawan City in Cotabato; Maitum in Sarangani province; Banga, and Santo Niño in South Cotabato; Kalamansig in Sultan Kudarat
