WATCH: Minor Strombolian activity on Mayon Volcano's 160th day of effusive eruption

State volcanologists observed minor Strombolian activity at Mayon Volcano on Sunday evening amid its ongoing effusive eruption.

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) shared camera footage of the volcanic activity on its social media accounts.

The minor Strombolian activity occurred at around 8:14 p.m. of Sunday, June 14, 2026.

Minor Strombolian activity is characterized as low level, intermittent volcanic explosions that eject incandescent lava fragments or bursts of expanding gases into the air.

Mayon Volcano is on its 160th consecutive day of effusive eruption, which has generated incandescent lava flows, pyroclastic density currents (PDCs) or “uson,” and rockfalls.

The volcano remains under Alert Level 3, which means intensified or magmatic unrest

PHIVOLCS reiterated that entry into Mayon Volcano’s six-kilometer permanent danger zone (PDZ) is strictly prohibited. — JMA, GMA News
