More than 2,000 bats were spotted in Maitum, Sarangani during the first quarter bat monitoring activity conducted by the Community Environment and Natural Resources Office (CENRO)-Kiamba.
The monitoring team observed the bats roosting in the treetops by day and flying across the skies at night.
According to the Department of Environment and Natural Resources-SOCCSKSARGEN (DENR-12), the area has been the home to the giant golden-crowned flying fox, one of the world’s largest bat species and an endangered species vital to forest regeneration and ecological balance.
“Bat conservation plays a crucial role in maintaining the biodiversity, as the only flying mammal help disperse seeds and pollinate trees,” DENR-12 said.
CENRO-Kiamba’s ensures the safety of the bats against threats of poaching and habitat destruction through regular monitoring.
“Said office remains committed to protecting the province’s natural resources, urging communities to support efforts in preserving these vital species for future generations, aligning with the Republic Act No. 9147, or the Wildlife Resources Conservation and Protection Act, which mandates the safeguarding of threatened species and their habitats,” DENR-12 added.
