Colorful kites made by inmates flew high over Naujan, Oriental Mindoro during the Saranggolahan sa Naujan kite festival on Easter Sunday, April 20, 2025, each one carrying a message of hope and second chances.

Persons Deprived of Liberty (PDLs) from the BJMP-Naujan District Jail joined the annual event at the Naujan Sports Complex, where they showcased handcrafted kites alongside entries from the community.

One eye-catching kite, shaped like a BJMP transport vehicle, won Best Design in the Synchronized Kite Category, beating 16 other entries.

BJMP MIMAROPA’s regional information officer, Jail Officer 3 Joefrie Anglo said the design reflected the inmates’ current situation while symbolizing their dreams of freedom and change.

He added the festival is part of their ongoing programs to help inmates grow beyond just vocational skills.

“The Saranggolahan Festival gave PDLs the chance to express themselves and show the public the positive changes happening inside our facilities,” Anglo said.

Jail Officer 1 Allen Glen Delica, the local jail’s community relations officer, said these events help inmates reconnect with their talents and find new purpose.
