Following reports of individuals collecting parking fees illegally around the Mangaldan Public Plaza, the local government reminded motorists that parking at the plaza is free.
Some individuals reportedly charged P15 to P20 per vehicle, especially along SB Drive beside the plaza.
“May mga naniningil kasi diyan lima o kaya sampung piso. Kapag estudyante, talagang sinisingil. Dapat sana libre,” Elsie Cruz, a vendor inside the plaza, said.
In response, the Public Order and Safety Office (POSO) called in those caught asking for payment and placed large “No Parking Fee” signs around the area to inform the public.
“Kaya naglagay kami ng signages nang sa ganun ‘yung mga magparada diyan mula umaga hanggang hapon ay free parking. Walang utos o inutusan na tao na mangingil diyan sa area na ‘yan ng paradahan natin,” Gerry Ydia, POSO Chief of Mangaldan, said.
For regular market-goers like Noel Vinuya, the move is a big help.
“Sayang din kasi ‘yung parking fee, ibili na lang ng pagkain ng bata,” he said.
POSO and the Municipal Plaza Park Administrator now conduct regular patrols to ensure no illegal fee collection happens. They also reminded motorists to report any individuals still attempting to charge parking fees.
