Dagupan City launched the 51st celebration of Nutrition Month in Barangay Bonuan Binloc, with the goal of reminding the public about healthy eating habits.
Other barangays including Bonuan Gueset, Bonuan Boquig, Calmay, and Pantal also joined the program organized by the City Nutrition Office.
The event highlighted simple rules to help residents live a healthier life, especially those who want to be healthy but lack proper knowledge.
“Pinakamadaling paraan, intindihin. Simpleng steps lang po. Para makamit ang goals towards a healthy body,” Dagupan City Nutrition Officer Ana Mariel Visperas said.
The city reintroduced the 10 "Kumainments" or commandments on eating, five initial tips and five follow-up reminders, which aim to promote wellness through proper nutrition.
According to the Nutrition Office, food is a right, not a privilege.
They also encouraged families to plant backyard gardens to help secure access to fresh food.
Despite the progress, the City Nutrition Office said fighting malnutrition remains a challenge and requires strong community support.
In the past three years, Dagupan has reported a decrease in its malnutrition rate. The local government has worked closely with hospitals and health institutions to spread proper nutrition knowledge.
“Pagbibigay sa anak ng tamang pagkain, wastong pagkain. Tamang sukat ng pagkain at kung ano yung masustansiya,” Juvelyn Juaiting, Head of the Nutrition and Dietetics Department at Region 1 Medical Center (R1MC), said.
Even at a young age, some children are already learning healthy habits.
“Nasanay kasi siya na pag kumakain, kailangan may sabaw. Sabaw ng gulay. Hindi siya mahilig sa karne,” Theresa del Monte, grandmother of two-year-old Alliah Kim, said.
Nutrition Month activities in Dagupan will continue throughout July to raise awareness and promote healthy eating in every home.
