An ocean sunfish referred to locally as “mola-mola” was washed ashore in Kalibo town, Province of Aklan.
The ocean sunfish weighed reportedly about 50 kilograms, and measured 1.20 meters long and 0.70 meters wide. It was found in Barangay Andagao at about 4 p.m. on August 12, 2025.
The sunfish sustained wounds on its eyes which could have affected possibly its vision. It is believed that the sunfish swam in the shallow part of the sea, and drifted to the shoreline.
According to the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List of Threatened Species, the ocean sunfish is among “vulnerable species” due to several threats such as bycatch, plastic pollution, and boat strikes.
