Drainage canals in Barangay Bugo, Cagayan de Oro City clogged with mud and debris from flooding in the past week have been cleared.

The clearing operations were conducted after a series of strong typhoons triggered heavy rains in parts of Misamis Oriental and Cagayan de Oro City.

Barangay Bugo, one of the city’s flood-prone areas, conducted the operation to prevent flooding in the future.

Barangay Bugo project coordinator, Juliete Labonos, explained that the barangay serves as a catch basin because it is surrounded by mountains.

“Ang Bugo is a catch basin kay mga bukid man gud among surrounding from Puerto Heights dinhi sa Kabag-asan, Zone 8 puro na siya mountainous area tanan,” Labonos said.

A resident in Zone 6 added that floodwaters rise quickly during a downpour due to clogged drainage.

“Mao na gaagi ug dalan ang tubig kay ang drainage diha puno na sa yuta kung ma kuha nila ang yuta gikan didto paingon diri ang tubig diretso na,” a resident, Roldan Quintana, said.

During the operations, barangay workers discovered that the drainage canals were deeper than expected and capable of handling large volumes of water. Residents expressed hope that the cleanup drive would continue to prevent future flooding during bad weather.

Aside from the declogging operations, the community was urged to maintain the cleanliness of drainage canals.

“Importante kaayo atong drainage ma limpyo para kung mag-ulan ang tubig diha mo agi sa drainage unsaon pag agi sa tubig kung puno imong drainage sa mga basura, sa yuta,” Labonos added.
