Six students in Carles, Iloilo were rescued after their motorbanca conked out.
The incident happened in the waters of Sicogon, Carles at about 1 p.m. on November 25, 2025.
The students were reportedly from research works in Sicogon Island and were on their way home.
However, because of strong winds and huge waves triggered by Tropical Depression Verbena, the spars that connect the outriggers to the hull of the motorbanca snapped and the motorboat conked out.
According to Leon Rogador II, head of the Estancia Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (MDRRMO), one of the students was able to call a parent.
The father of the student, in turn, sought assistance from the authorities.
It was learned that another motorbanca passed in the area, saw the incident, and stopped to rescue the students prior to the arrival of responders. The students are all from Estancia.
Further, it was confirmed that a student served as boat skipper, according to the MDRRMO.
As of this writing, the students are all safe and have already gone home.
