Giant lanterns once again lit up the City of San Fernando, Pampanga as thousands gathered for the 117th Giant Lantern Festival, an annual tradition that celebrates creativity, craftsmanship, and the true spirit of Christmas.
This year, 10 barangays competed in the iconic Ligligan Parul, showcasing giant lanterns measuring about 20 feet in diameter, all powered by traditional rotor systems. Each entry carried themes meant to inspire hope and unity, including World Peace, Save Lives, Guardian Angel, and Faith, Hope, and Love—Soar High.
Spectators were especially delighted by the lantern of Barangay Bulaon, which featured synchronized movements set to trending K-pop songs, adding a modern twist to the traditional display.
Festival-goer Ryu Bembenuto said the lanterns carried a deeper meaning beyond their bright colors.
“There is more to life than what we are facing right now. That there is colorful situation… It reminds me of that pag nakikita ko ‘yung mga parol,” he said.
Many viewers also admired the detailed open-and-close mechanism of the lantern from Barangay Sto. Niño, which showcased intricate movement and design.
At the end of the competition, Barangay Bulaon was crowned champion, followed by Barangay Sto. Niño in first place, Barangay Dolores in second place, and Barangay Calulut in third place.
“Iilan lang ang taong kayang gumawa ng ganitong parol. Kung lantern maker ka na, pangalagaan mo ‘yun. Every year, improve mo ‘yung work mo,” Mark Flores, the champion lantern maker, said.
Organizers also noted the growing number of young lantern makers joining the competition this year, a sign that the centuries-old tradition continues to thrive among the next generation.
For residents of San Fernando, the Giant Lantern Festival remains as a shared celebration of faith, creativity, and hope, shining brightly for Filipinos during the Christmas season.
