Tears and smiles filled the BJMP Puerto Princesa City Jail Female Dormitory as persons deprived of liberty (PDLs) reunited with their families during a Christmas family day.

BJMP Mimaropa spokesperson Jail Officer 3 Joefrie Anglo said, for the PDLs, the visit meant more than a holiday activity.

It gave them a rare chance to hug their children, talk to their spouses in person, and feel the comfort of family. Many said the experience gave them strength as they face life inside jail.

Inside the jail compound, families shared laughter, quiet talks, and emotional embraces. Some spent Christmas together for the first time in years, while others were reminded that family ties stay strong despite separation.

Anglo said family visits help PDLs change for the better.

“Family support is vital in the process of change and rehabilitation. When PDLs feel that they are still loved and supported, it strengthens their resolve to reform and prepare for reintegration into society,” he said.

BJMP officials said they held the activity under strict security rules to keep everyone safe while allowing meaningful time between PDLs and their loved ones. They added that the family day is part of the bureau’s humane and reform programs, especially during the holiday season.

As the Christmas gathering ended, many PDLs returned to their cells carrying renewed hope, reminded that second chances are still possible even behind bars.
