Even at the slightest rain, Barangay 13 in Bacolod City got flooded anew on the first weekend of January 2026.
The shear line, the prevailing weather system, dumped heavy rainfall and brought strong winds that affected coastal dwellers again.
Jonel Canciller, a resident, said their house was flooded.
“Matindi ang hangin at ang alon kasi high tide. Umapaw ang tubig. Pati ang tubig sa dagat, umakyat sa taas,” Canciller said.
Another resident, Girlie, waded through the flood despite sustaining a wound. She said she sought a medical check-up later for fear of being infected with leptospirosis.
“Tinamaan sa kickstart ng motor. Pag-kick ko, tumalbog sa akin. (Reporter: Umiinom ka ng gamot?) Minsan umiinom,” Girlie said.
A sport utility vehicle (SUV) fell in a deep portion of a road project in Barangay Pahanocoy on January 4. A heavy equipment was needed to pull the vehicle back in place on the road.
According to the monitoring of the Bacolod City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (CDRRMO), aside from Barangay 13, Barangay Sum-ag was also flooded and a few major roads. The water receded morning on January 5.
“We activated ang ating mga kasamahan sa barangay, mga DRRM counterpart natin. By that time, na-preposition na natin ang ating mga equipment as well as our rescue personnel,” according to Earl Edward Ramirez, chief operations officer of the Bacolod CDRRMO.
Based on the report of the Negros Occidental Provincial DRRMO, flooding in a few barangays in E.B. Magalona town were monitored. No resident was evacuated as the flood subsided immediately.
PDRRMO warned residents of possible rains in the next days due to the prevalence of the shear line.
“Makakaranas tayo ng maulang panahon dala ng ating shear line,” Melvin Fierro, Negros Occidental PDRRMO weatherman, said.
