Mandaue City in Cebu has used a portion of an old dumpsite as temporary dumpsite amid the challenges following the trash slide in Barangay Binaliw, Cebu City where 13 employees of a private sanitary landfill died, as of January 13, 2026.
What used to be the Umapad dumpsite that was converted into a park is now reused as a dumpsite. However, the city government said that garbage will be dumped at a certain portion only and will be temporary.
Garbage trucks arrived one after another at what is now the Mandaue Green Learning Park in Barangay Umapad. Since Saturday, January 10, 2026, a portion of the park is being used as a transfer station for garbage collected from city barangays.
To regulate the entry and exit of dump trucks at the park, each barangay has its scheduled time for the dumping. To make it to the scheduled time, the barangays have also adjusted the hours in collecting trash from houses.
“Alas 4 sa kadlawon hangtod alas 10 sa buntag ang among pagkolekta sa basura. I-adjust sad ang oras namo aron biyahe mi sa kadlawon," according to RJ Serafin, garbage truck driver.
"Naa man tay schedule, sa barangay, 27 barangays magkadasok dinhi kana diha naghuwat sa turno, kani sila alas 11 hangtod alas 5,” Elena Albaracin, staff member at the Mandaue City Green Learning Park.
“Depende sa barangay captain unsay strategy ila buhaton nga malihok nila aron makalabay sila sa oras kay og di ta molimit sa oras, matraffic na didto,” said Coun. Dante Borbajo, ABC president in Mandaue City.
The set-up is just temporary, the city said, so as to preserve the park.
"Among gitan-aw mga two (2) weeks mangita ta'g laing alternatibo kay ganahan nato i-preserve ang park, ang ato lang emergency man ni wa ta'y laing makalabayan,” Mayor Jonkie Ouano said.
The city has checked a facility but is yet to undergo negotiations.
“Naay laing gipang-offer, pero lagyo man - Bogo, naa sad gi-offer sa Aloguinsan, ingon ana kalayo, uban ra ba natong dumptrucks, garbage trucks di baya ingon ana ka A1 ang kondisyon ba, so of course, cost pa, maong mas ganahan mig duol-duol,” Ouano pointed out.
