The Local Government Unit (LGU) of Cebu City will provide shredding machines to all of its 80 barangays to help control the volume of trash ending up in other landfills, or dumpsites.
According to Cebu City Mayor Nestor Archival, disposing tons of garbage in other areas is costly for the LGU, especially in Aloguinsan which is in midwest Cebu Province.
The shredding machine will help process biodegradable trash into fertilizer, so that only non-biodegradable trash will be taken either to landfills or to dumpsites.
The search for alternative dumpsites is challenging, following the closure of operations at Binaliw landfill after the tragedy that killed 36 workers on January 8, 2026 and injured 18 others.
Aside from Aloguinsan, the Cebu City Government is also looking at Bogo City for possible disposal. However, costs are higher given the distance.
As of this writing, the LGU has P30 million funds allocated for garbage disposal outside of Cebu City.
The shredding machines are beneficial to the barangays to reduce the volume of garbage taken to other places and the actual cost of the disposal.
Meanwhile, a barangay councilman initiated proper garbage management beginning in his own household.
Barangay Camputhaw Councilman Ram Salonoy processes coconut husks into fertilizer. He also has a mini-compost pit at the back of his house where trash is disposed of for vermicomposting.
With the help of earthworms, breaking down of biodegradable trash into fertilizer becomes easier and faster. The byproduct is an organic kind of fertilizer.
