Inside a jail in Oriental Mindoro, 25 Persons Deprived of Liberty (PDLs) are preparing to complete senior high school through the government’s Alternative Learning System (ALS).

The PDLs at the Bansud District Jail held a graduation pictorial ahead of finishing their Senior High School education under the ALS. Some smiled during the photo session, while others became emotional as they reflected on their journey.

Jail officials said the ALS program allows qualified inmates to continue their education despite incarceration. The initiative forms part of the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology’s rehabilitation efforts to help prepare inmates for reintegration into society.

BJMP MIMAROPA spokesperson Jail Officer 3 Joefrie Anglo said education plays a key role in changing lives inside jail facilities.

“Education is not merely academic instruction; it is a journey of transformation. Within these walls, they are given the space to reflect, to grow in discipline, and to rediscover their worth as persons. Confinement does not erase dignity. Through learning, they are slowly rebuilding confidence, strengthening character, and nurturing hope for a better future beyond these bars,” Anglo said.

BJMP officials said the graduation pictorial symbolizes more than finishing school. For the 25 inmates, it represents a second chance and an opportunity to rebuild their lives.

The agency said it will continue to strengthen education and skills training programs in jail facilities across the region to support rehabilitation and reintegration efforts.
