A temporary footbridge was built over a river in South Upi, Maguindanao del Sur after videos showed students and residents risking their lives while crossing the river.

A video taken on February 26, 2026 showed several students and residents attempting to cross the Reongan River in Barangay Kigan while the water level was high following heavy rains.

Residents used a rope as a guide as they navigated their way through the strong current. Others relied on improvised rafts while some rode horses to get to the other side of the river.

According to residents, this situation happens whenever flooding occurs in the area during downpour.

Because of this, students and residents expressed relief after the local government installed a temporary footbridge made of bamboo and wood.

The construction began on Sunday, March 1, 2026, and was completed quickly through “bayanihan” or collective effort of residents from Barangay Kigan and nearby Barangay Pandan.
