Handmade products made by persons deprived of liberty (PDLs) were showcased at a trade fair during the MIMAROPA Regional Athletic Association (MRAA) 2026 in Sablayan, Occidental Mindoro.
The Bureau of Jail Management and Penology Mamburao District Jail displayed the crafts at the Sablayan Sports Complex as part of activities linked to the regional sports meet.
The initiative is part of the Department of Education program called “Baratilyo” in Occidental Mindoro, in partnership with the Alternative Learning System. The program supports education and skills training for PDL learners.
Items on display included handmade crafts produced by inmates as part of their rehabilitation programs inside the jail facility. The products highlight the skills they gained through ALS classes and livelihood training.
BJMP Mimaropa spokesperson Joefrie Anglo said the activity reflects the bureau’s focus on rehabilitation.
“These products reflect the creativity, discipline, and skills our PDL have developed through continuous education and training. Rehabilitation goes beyond confinement — it is about equipping them with the tools they need to rebuild their lives and become productive members of society,” Anglo said.
He added that proceeds from the sales will help support livelihood projects inside the jail and encourage inmates to continue improving themselves.
The Mamburao District Jail also invited athletes, visitors, and participants of the MRAA to support the initiative by buying locally made products, as part of efforts to strengthen rehabilitation and reintegration programs.
