The Department of Agriculture (DA) has distributed 200 breeder pigs to farmers in Quirino province as part of its swine repopulation program following the impact of African Swine Fever (ASF).
The program aims to help rebuild the province's hog industry, which suffered heavy losses after ASF killed more than 5,000 pigs during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Each beneficiary received two breeder sows to restart hog production.
Under the program, beneficiaries will return six piglets from the first litter to the DA. The piglets will then be distributed to other hog raisers so more farmers can benefit from the repopulation effort.
The DA said the initiative is part of its continuing efforts to restore the local swine industry and help farmers recover from ASF-related losses.
