Nearly 500 young participants from 63 barangays joined the "Laro ng Lahi" held recently in Virac, Catanduanes, aiming to breathe new life into traditional games that are fading gradually away due to the pervasive influence of technology.
The event featured a variety of traditional games, including Pukpok Palayok, Sack Race, Sipa de Tingga, Limburak, Tiyakaf, Patintero, Igo-Tawo, and the Buradol Contest.
Local youth development officers organized the activity as an annual endeavor to ensure that the younger generation doesn't lose touch with their cultural heritage, which has become somewhat overshadowed by the prevalence of modern gadgets.
"Ang local government of Virac po ay tina-try or binibigyang buhay ulit yung mga traditional games na mapapasawalang bahala na, kasi yung mga gadgets halos yun nalang ang palaging hawak ng ating mga kabataan," Mary Grace Tabinas, the Local Youth Development Officer, says.
