In its goal to further instill discipline, time management, civic-mindedness, sense of volunteerism, among other timeless values, the Talisay City National High School in Cebu Province launched the creation of a Junior Police force among its students.

The student-police are tasked to man the entry and exit points of the campus, patrol the school premises, check the classrooms, inspect students if they come to school in appropriate uniform and are wearing their identification cards, entertain inquiry from visitors and assist them to the principal’s office, among other vital tasks.

They are helpmates of security guards and teachers to ensure safety, peace, and orderliness in the campus.

According to Reynaldo Cabusas, Jr., the school’s Junior Police coordinator, these are the students who went through basic military training in December 2023.

They also received training from the Talisay City Police on intelligence monitoring and investigation, as well as on basic traffic rules and regulations.

Junior police are volunteers, or that they are not obliged to become one. So that their volunteer work would not impede academic learning, their duties and responsibilities as Junor Police are carried out only on their free time.

The pioneer junior police are mostly Grade 12 students, but participation is open to all grade levels.

Of the 13 junior police, three are women; one of which is Jenny Rose Tumulak, a Grade 12 student.

She said she aspires to be a policewoman soon, so she takes the training to heart.

Jenny Rose said the training harnesses her leadership skills, her sense of responsibility, her maturity and independence.

Crislee Negrido, Supreme Secondary Learner Government adviser, said that the junior police-volunteers are students who mostly excel in the academics.

“Bisan busy, gisiguro gyud usab nila nga di maapektuhan ang ilang academics, gani sagad kanila mga honor students,” Negrido said.

As for Cabusas, training more junior police leads to building the character and attributes of more responsible and patriotic members of society.
